テントウムシ＝Ｌａｄｙ Ｂｉｒｄ

◆ナミテントウが無事羽化しましたので、落ち着いてこれが書けます。本当はナナホシテントウがらみで書きたかったのですが、まあいいでしょう。

◆テントウムシという虫は、どこの国でも好かれる虫のようですね。有名なところで、「マザーグース」にも登場します。私の蔵書に「The ANNOTED Mother Goose」（「注釈つきマザーグース」というのかな）がありまして、そこから引用します。

Ｌａｄｙ　Ｂｉｒｄ　は４６７番にあります。

Fly away home,
Your house is on fire,
Your children will burn.

というものです。訳しません。「注釈」も引用さて頂きます。

In Norfolk, England, the lady-bird is known as the "burny bee," and people there once sang:
Burnie bee, burnie bee,
Tell me when your wedding be?
If it be to-morrow day,
Take your wings and fly away.

Later versions of "Lady Bird," the first rhyme in the earliest known nursery rhyme book, often add the lines:
All except one
And that's little Ann
And she has crept under the warming pan.

Or, in Yprkshire, Englend, where the lady-bird was known as the "lady-cow," the added lines went:
All but one that lig under a stone,
Fly thee home, lady-cow, ere it be gone.

When a lady-bird -a ladybug in America- lights upon you, you are supposed to recite this rhyme to drive it away unharmed, for it is very unlucky to kill or injure the creature.
If spoken to politely enough, the ladybug, it is said, will even fly to one's sweetheart:
Lady-bird, lady-bird, fly from my hand,
Tell me where my true love stands,
Up-hill or down-hill or by the sea sand,
Lady-bird, lady-bird, fly from my hand,
Fly, lady-bird, fly!
   North, south, east or west;
Fly to the pretty girl
   That I love best.

The little insect, for some reason burried in the veils of antiquity, is regarded with awe almost everywhere in the world, and in many places it semms to have some religious connection. This is reflected in its very name in English, which means "Our Lady's bird."

◆１９６０年代のフォークグループ「ピーター、ポール、＆マリー」が来日公演をしたときのライブレコードというのを持っていたのですが、ここで、ＰＰＭは「雨降りの日の退屈な少女」の歌（題名を忘れました）を歌っていまして

Rain rain, Go away, Come again some other day.

だったかなぁ、こんな歌詞があったように記憶しています。（古い記憶であいまいです）。

で、この歌の中に「Ｌａｄｙ　ｂｉｒｄ　Ｌａｄｙ　ｂｉｒｄ　・・・・」という歌を挿入していました。私自身は口ずさめますが、これが本来の童謡なのか、ＰＰＭの作曲なのかは知りません。

高校生の頃、テントウムシがＬａｄｙ　ｂｉｒｄ　というのだということをこうして知ったわけですが、これがマザーグースの歌だということを知ったのは、もっと後のことでした。
